In the shipping industry, the role of a Superintendent is both unique and vital. Superintendents bear the responsibility of making confident decisions in challenging situations, a role that continually pushes the boundaries of their personal and professional capacities. Sergei, who has served as a Technical Superintendent at Tschudi Ship Management for more than 18 years, has gained a lot of experience in excelling in his duties and understanding the essential character traits required to become an exceptional Superintendent.

Superintendents often face pressure from various fronts, including vessel owners, tight schedules, and unforeseen issues. However, the key to managing this pressure lies in striking a balance between urgency and perfection.

The most challenging factor about the job is the ability to oversee vessel operations, ensuring safety while at the same time making critical decisions. Once Superintendent acknowledges that the difficulty level depends on one's perspective, they can better navigate the obstacles they face. “If you have a genuine passion for the job, the challenges become manageable,” explains Sergei with dedication. “However, if the job doesn't resonate with you, it can indeed be tough and demanding,” adds Sergei. While individuals in other positions, such as Chief Engineers, may have the technical knowledge necessary for a promotion to Superintendent, they often lack the unique character traits that are equally essential for performing exceptionally well in this role.

“Being a Superintendent is more than just an extension of a Chief Engineer's role,” says Sergei. It encompasses a broader spectrum of responsibilities, such as accounting, invoicing, and dealing with various parties like vessel owners, flag authorities, and classification societies. Unlike topics learned in university, much of this knowledge cannot be acquired through conventional education. It is through experience that Superintendents become adept at handling diverse challenges. Superintendents must have the ability to find information, navigate complex situations, and make decisions autonomously, so by nature they need to be very independent. This trait is underpinned by a keen sense of organization, knowing where and how to find the necessary resources, much like searching the internet for personal needs. Independence and organizational skills are essential for a Superintendent to thrive in their role.

Superintendents are a unique blend of technical expertise, independence, adaptability, and responsibility. “They are like doctors,” adds Sergei jokingly.

Over time, Superintendents build a wealth of knowledge that allows them to handle the situations effectively. They become adept at problem-solving, learning from each unique experience. Even after years in the role, Superintendents continue to meet new challenges and learn from them, ensuring they stay sharp and adaptable. “In my last business trip, I came across a situationwhich was totally new for me. So even after 18 years I can still find myself innew situations,” says Sergei.

Superintendents often face pressure from variousfronts, including vessel owners, tight schedules, and unforeseen issues. However, the key to managing this pressure lies in striking a balance between urgency and perfection. While it's essential to address issues promptly, safety and quality should never be compromised. “I rather wait one extra day than make a wrong decision,” shares Sergei from experience. The responsibility to ensure the vessel'ssafety and the well-being of the crew is paramount. “But you also need to know that unexpected situationsare never your fault," tells Sergei.
